What changed for local search
A growing share of local research now happens inside an assistant. Someone types “best commercial cleaner in Norwich” or “who does Shopify SEO in Norfolk” into ChatGPT or reads a Google AI Overview, and gets a short answer naming a few suppliers with links. The click still exists, but it goes to whoever was quoted.
For a Norfolk business this is unusually good news. Local categories have far fewer credible, well-structured sources than national ones, so the bar to become the source is lower here than in a London category. If you want the wider mechanics first, our plain-English guide to generative engine optimisation covers where AI answers come from.

The five local levers
Entity clarity
- What it means
- One name, one area served, one set of contact facts everywhere
- Why it decides the citation
- Decides whether a model can identify you at all
Local schema
- What it means
- Organization or LocalBusiness, areaServed, service nodes, FAQ
- Why it decides the citation
- Gives the answer engine facts it can quote safely
Answer-shaped pages
- What it means
- Local question as a heading, 40 to 60 word answer beneath
- Why it decides the citation
- This is the text assistants lift verbatim
Corroboration
- What it means
- Directories, local press, reviews, partner pages agreeing
- Why it decides the citation
- Breaks the tie when two suppliers look equal
Crawler access
- What it means
- GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended allowed
- Why it decides the citation
- Blocking them removes you from the pool entirely
Assistants do not quote the best business. They quote the clearest one.

A practical Norfolk checklist
- Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt: GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended. Blocking them is an instant exit.
- Publish one canonical set of business facts: trading name, area served, contact route, hours, and keep them identical on your site, Google Business Profile and every directory.
- Add Organization or LocalBusiness schema with areaServed covering Norwich, Norfolk and anywhere else you genuinely serve.
- Write one page per service that names the place in the H1 and answers the buyer's local question in the first 60 words.
- Publish prices, or at least honest bands. Assistants strongly favour sources with concrete numbers.
- Add FAQ blocks built from real sales questions, in the buyer's words, with self-contained answers.
- Earn corroboration: local press, chamber and trade directories, supplier and partner pages, and reviews that repeat the same facts.
- Make sure key content is in the server-rendered HTML, not injected client-side after load.
How to measure it
Rankings will not tell you whether you are being quoted. Build a prompt log instead: 15 to 25 questions a Norfolk buyer would genuinely ask, run monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, recording whether you are named, what is said and which page was cited. Pair that with assistant referral traffic in analytics and AI crawler hits in your server logs.
The full method, including what to log and how to spot answer cannibalisation, is in how to measure your brand’s AI search visibility, and the tactical citation checklist is in how to get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
What it costs
It should not be a second invoice. The crawl access, entity work, schema, answer-shaped pages and authority building are the same jobs that win local rankings, held to a higher standard. Our SEO and AI Visibility subscription starts at £1,250 a month plus VAT with fixed monthly placement volumes and AI answer tracking in every report. The citation specific scope sits on the AI SEO page, the tiers are on the SEO packages page, and Norfolk market price benchmarks are in what marketing costs in Norwich.
Questions we get asked
Make the local facts machine-readable and corroborated. That means a clear business entity with consistent name, area served and contact details, LocalBusiness or Organization schema, pages that answer local questions in 40 to 60 words, published prices, and third-party sources such as directories, press and reviews that repeat the same facts. Assistants quote the source that is easiest to verify.
